Our trip through Norway!

Dearest friends...
Our tour began in Oslo, where all tour participants will have views of the Oslo Fjord from their hotel rooms. Our tour group experienced Norway’s Constitution Day in Oslo on May 17. We enjoyed front row seats to the world’s largest children’s parade, which concluded with the royal family greeting the parading children and marching bands at the royal palace.

We toured the newly re-opened Viking Museum, and learned of the various crafts and ship building industry of the Vikings. The experience breathtaking views as we crossed the glacier by train from Oslo to Bergen. The journey is rated as one of the most scenic in the world. In Bergen, we stayed on the picturesque and historic wharf, which is an UNESCO world heritage site. The funicular, by our hotel in Bergen, we were transported to the highest peak where we admired the views of the archipelago of the Bergen coast line. We learned about the trade history and commerce that shaped and developed Norway’s relationship with central Europe.

Cruising north, we entered the fjords for a private guided tour of the Geiranger Fjord, which is depicted on the cover page of this page, perhaps the most picturesque landscape in the world.  We viewed and experienced the snowcapped mountains with its cascading waterfalls dropping into the waters below.  In Trondheim, we learned how christianity was introduced to Norway by King Olav the Holy, and then visited his burial place within the majestic Nidaros Cathedral, which is the largest cathedral in northern Europe. Music was celebrated in historic cathedrals and churches along our journey, offered by Dr. Avery, Dr. Gundersen, and Dr. Thallander!

We returned to our hotel,  and enjoyed the evening at leisure.

We traveled from Oslo to Bergen by a relaxing train ride, and enjoyed the scenery of nature along our journey. Bergen was founded by the Vikings, and soon after became a Hanseatic trade town. The historic wharf and old town is now a romantic area dotted with restaurants, and bars overlooking the water. Our charming hotel is also on the harbor, where we enjoyed easy walking distances to many sites and attractions. Dinner was served at a local restaurant this evening.

BERGEN
This morning, we drove a few minutes to Troldhaugen, which is a neighborhood in Bergen, to visit the home of Edvard Grieg. We returned to Bergen for lunch before we enjoy a concert at the historic Bergen Domkirke. Domkirke is the equivalent of cathedral, and parts of the church are from the Viking age. That evening we gathered for dinner as a group at a restaurant by the water, and enjoyed a traditional Norwegian meal.

DAY 7 - FJORD CRUISE

Before boarding our cruise this afternoon, we had more time to enjoy Bergen. We took the funicular to the top of a scenic outlook point that offered great views of the city and ocean.  We boarded our cruise, and enjoyed a delicious meal as we depart Bergen and sail the old Viking route along the Hjeltefjord.

DAY 8 - ÅLESUND AND GEIRANGER FJORD

Ålesund is renowned for its beautiful Art Nouveau architecture and Atlanterhavsparken, one of northern Europe’s largest saltwater aquariums. Once in the fjord, you saw the famous Seven Sisters waterfalls cascading down the cliffs.
